Specific Applications of Coal-based Powdered Activated Carbon in Liquid Purification and Gas Treatment

2025-12-25

Coal-based powdered activated carbon is a powdered adsorbent material made from anthracite coal. It possesses a large specific surface area and abundant pore structure, enabling it to efficiently adsorb organic matter, odor substances, and toxic and harmful components. Its main applications are concentrated in liquid purification and gas treatment, specifically including:

Water Treatment Applications: Widely used in tap water purification, industrial water treatment, wastewater treatment, and deep drinking water purification. It effectively adsorbs free chlorine, phenols, sulfides, and organic pollutants (such as mutagenic precursors) in water, reducing chemical oxygen demand (COD) and five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and improving water taste and safety. Coal-based powdered activated carbon is used in power plants, petrochemical plants, and the food and beverage industry for raw water pretreatment and greywater reuse.

Air Purification and Exhaust Gas Treatment: Suitable for industrial exhaust gas purification, gas desulfurization, and solvent recovery. It can adsorb organic vapors and toxic gases such as benzene, toluene, xylene, and oil vapors. It is commonly used in gas masks, air purifiers, and chemical waste gas treatment systems.

Industrial Auxiliary Functions: Used as a catalyst carrier in processes such as petroleum catalytic reforming, or for decolorization, purification, and deodorization in the sugar, pharmaceutical, and food industries, for example, in the refining of amino acids, antibiotics, and vitamins.

Other Applications: Used in fish farming for water filtration to reduce algae and organic impurities; also applicable to solvent recovery, protective equipment, and soil improvement.
